Call to Action! Women are in desperate need of care and support. Recognize and provide timely responses to women with reproductive and birth related trauma!

Advocating for comprehensive care to support the resiliency of women with reproductive and birth related post-traumatic stress.

This project outlines the spectrum of education necessary for health care providers to be able to identify and treat women with reproductive and birth trauma.

In order for women to get the needed care,

  • health care providers, such as doctors, midwives, nurses and therapists, need to be properly trained to support this specific type of trauma
  • the trauma needs to be identified by health care providers
  • resources and referrals need to be provided for women to get the appropriate care

The psychiatric and medical communities have now well documented the toll of traumatic events on the body and mind through research in epigenetics, neuroscience, and psychology. Timely and effective physical and emotional care for women who have experienced a reproductive and birth trauma is of the utmost importance for alleviating acute stress and increasing the chances for positive outcomes. Health care providers need education about the specific experiences and needs of women impacted by reproductive and birth trauma.

The medical and psychological community needs greater awareness in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of reproductive and birth traumas and post-traumatic stress.

Doctors, Midwives, Nurses & Doulas need to generally understand reproduction and birth psychology and trauma, offer a greater sensitivity with such knowledge, and provide standard resource materials that support women to have access to the appropriate continued care.

A minority of Counselors & Therapists have been specifically trained in reproductive and birth psychology, reproductive trauma, and the management of traumatic grief recovery.  Thus, properly trained clinicians that understand the residual effects of reproduction and birth trauma on a women’s well-being and its impacts on attachment and bonding are highly needed.
